Diesel fuel is one of the largest operating expenses in trucking, so when prices surge, the impact reaches far beyond the fuel pump.  A sharp increase in diesel prices can affect everything from carrier operating costs and freight rates to capacity, routing decisions and the final price consumers pay for goods.

With the U.S. average diesel price recently surpassing $6 per gallon, shippers and transportation providers are facing another challenging variable in an already complex freight environment.

For companies moving full truckload, LTL, temperature-sensitive, hazmat or high-value freight, understanding how fuel prices influence transportation decisions is critical.  The lowest freight quote isn't necessarily the lowest-cost transportation solution when reliability, capacity, service and risk are factored into the equation.

Why Diesel Prices Matter So Much to Trucking

Unlike many industries, trucking cannot simply reduce fuel consumption when prices rise.  Trucks have to move.

How Higher Fuel Prices Affect Freight Rates

Fuel doesn't necessarily increase the underlying linehaul rate dollar-for-dollar.  Instead, many transportation contracts separate the carrier's base transportation rate from a fuel surcharge.

The fuel surcharge is designed to help carriers and shippers account for fluctuations in fuel costs.  When diesel prices rise, the surcharge generally increases according to the methodology established in the carrier's contract or pricing agreement.  This structure provides an important benefit: it creates greater transparency around what portion of transportation pricing is being driven by fuel.

2. Look at Total Transportation Cost

Don't evaluate carriers solely on linehaul.

The carrier with the lowest initial quote may not produce the lowest overall transportation cost.

3. Improve Shipment Planning

Better planning can reduce unnecessary miles and improve truck utilization.  Consolidating compatible shipments, improving appointment scheduling and reducing detention can all help control transportation expenses.

4. Work With a Carrier That Understands Your Freight

Different commodities have different transportation requirements.  Food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, high-security freight and general commodities shouldn't necessarily be managed the same way.

The transportation provider should understand the risks associated with the product—not simply the distance it needs to travel.

5. Don't Sacrifice Service to Save a Few Dollars
