Driving Compassion: Road Scholar's Support for National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month

Every July, National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness & Prevention Month shines a spotlight on the millions of children, adults, and families living with craniofacial differences.  It is a time to raise awareness, promote acceptance, and recognize the organizations and individuals working tirelessly to improve lives.

For Road Scholar Transport, this month is deeply personal.  Through one unforgettable encounter, a simple conversation became a lasting commitment to spreading awareness across America's highways.

A Chance Meeting That Changed Everything

Some of life's most meaningful moments happen when you least expect them.

Years ago, Road Scholar Transport founder and former president Jim Barrett met with a representative from the Children's Craniofacial Association (CCA).  The meeting took place in an ordinary neighborhood pizza restaurant, where the representative asked if Road Scholar would consider designing a trailer to help raise awareness for children born with craniofacial conditions.

At the time, business was incredibly busy.  Jim suggested they reconnect in a month or two when schedules were less demanding.

As the meeting ended, something remarkable happened.  A young girl entered the restaurant with a visible craniofacial difference.  In a nearly empty building, the timing was impossible to ignore.  Jim immediately turned back to the representative and said:

"It's not a question anymore.  We're going to do the trailer."

That single moment became the beginning of something much bigger than a trailer wrap—it became part of Road Scholar's mission to use transportation as a force for good.

Raising Awareness One Mile at a Time

Today, Road Scholar's Children's Craniofacial Association awareness trailer travels thousands of miles each year, carrying more than freight.  It carries a message of compassion, acceptance, and hope.

The trailer is one of several awareness vehicles in Road Scholar's fleet dedicated to causes that impact families across the country, including breast cancer, autism awareness, veterans, children's charities, and other important organizations.

Every mile serves as an opportunity to educate the public and remind people that differences deserve understanding—not judgment.

Understanding Craniofacial Conditions

Craniofacial conditions affect the growth and development of the head, face, and jaws.  They include cleft lip, cleft palate, craniosynostosis, facial microsomia, Treacher Collins syndrome, and many other rare conditions.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Approximately 1 in every 1,600 babies in the United States is born with both a cleft lip and cleft palate.
  • About 1 in every 2,800 babies are born with a cleft lip alone.
  • Roughly 1 in every 1,700 babies are born with a cleft palate alone.

Combined, thousands of babies are born with cleft conditions in the United States every year, often requiring multiple surgeries, speech therapy, orthodontic treatment, and ongoing specialized medical care throughout childhood.

Beyond the medical challenges, many children also face social obstacles that can impact confidence and emotional well-being.  Increased awareness helps foster understanding, reduce stigma, and create more inclusive communities.

More Than Transportation

At Road Scholar Transport, we believe every trailer has the power to tell a story.

While our drivers safely transport food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and other essential freight across North America, our awareness trailers deliver something equally valuable—visibility for causes that deserve national attention.

The Children's Craniofacial Association trailer reminds everyone who sees it that every child deserves to feel accepted, confident, and celebrated for who they are.

Driving Awareness Forward

National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness & Prevention Month reminds us that even the smallest acts of compassion can create lasting change.

One conversation.
One unexpected encounter.
One decision.

Those moments inspired a trailer that continues to spark conversations and spread hope across the country every single day.

As Road Scholar Transport proudly continues its Awareness Campaign, we remain committed to supporting organizations that make a difference—not only through the freight we deliver, but through the messages we carry.
