Spreading Awareness in Motion: Road Scholar Transport Honors Neurofibromatosis, Lupus, and Cystic Fibrosis
With a fleet dedicated to dozens of meaningful causes, Road Scholar Transport continues its mission of turning miles into awareness. Each truck tells a story—and this May, we spotlight three impactful causes: Neurofibromatosis, Lupus, and Cystic Fibrosis.
Neurofibromatosis (NF)
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a group of genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow on nerve tissue. Today, it affects roughly 1 in 3,000 people worldwide, with about 50% of cases resulting from spontaneous genetic mutations.
Types of NF include:
- NF1: The most common form, often identified by skin changes such as café-au-lait spots and benign nerve tumors.
- NF2-related Schwannomatosis (NF2): A rarer form that can lead to hearing loss, balance challenges, and tumors on auditory nerves.
- Schwannomatosis: The rarest type, often associated with chronic and severe nerve pain.
Road Scholar Transport proudly partnered with the Children’s Tumor Foundation to introduce a dedicated awareness truck in 2019. Featuring the image of President Debra Barrett’s grandson, the truck carries a powerful message: “Imagine the Possibilities.” It’s a moving tribute to resilience, research, and hope for families affected by NF.
Lupus
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can impact the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs. As of 2026, an estimated 1.5 million Americans and at least 5 million people worldwide are living with lupus. About 90% of those affected are women, most commonly between the ages of 15 and 44.
Common forms of lupus include:
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): The most prevalent and serious type, affecting multiple organ systems.
- Cutaneous Lupus: Primarily affects the skin, often causing rashes and lesions.
- Drug-Induced Lupus: Triggered by certain medications and typically reversible.
- Neonatal Lupus: A rare condition affecting infants born to mothers with lupus.
In 2013, Road Scholar unveiled a lupus awareness truck in memory of Tanitha Kulsiri, who passed away from SLE at just 22 years old. The truck features her original artwork and carries the message “LIVE BEYOND LUPUS,” continuing her legacy while supporting the Tanitha Kulsiri Memorial Foundation.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. In 2026, approximately 40,000 people in the United States and more than 105,000 people worldwide are living with CF. Thanks to advances in treatment, the median predicted survival age has now risen into the 60s, marking a significant improvement over past decades.
Key facts about CF:
- Cause: A mutation in the CFTR gene leads to thick, sticky mucus buildup in the body.
- Symptoms: Persistent coughing, frequent lung infections, digestive issues, and difficulty gaining weight.
- Treatment: While there is still no cure, breakthrough therapies—including CFTR modulators—have dramatically improved quality of life and longevity.
Inspired by a young child who described the disease as “65 Roses,” Road Scholar created a CF awareness truck adorned with 65 roses—symbolizing strength, awareness, and hope for a cure.
Driving Awareness Forward
At Road Scholar Transport, these trucks are more than just equipment—they’re powerful, moving billboards for awareness, education, and compassion. Every mile traveled helps spark conversations, honor stories, and bring visibility to conditions that impact millions of lives.
