Get Inspection-Ready: CVSA's 2025 Roadcheck Focus Revealed

The International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program for commercial motor vehicles in North America.  Over three days, tens of thousands of inspections are conducted to ensure compliance with federal, state, and provincial regulations.  For context, last year saw 48,761 inspections, with 95% of drivers passing without out-of-service violations.

This year’s roadcheck will take place May 13-15th.  Here’s what inspectors will be watching for:

Driver Focus: Hours-of-Service and Credentials

Inspectors will review:

  • Hours-of-service documentation to ensure proper logging and adherence to limits
  • Operating credentials, such as CDL and medical certificates
  • Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status
  • Seat belt usage
  • Signs of drug or alcohol impairment

Any violations—especially around improper logs or missing credentials—can result in out-of-service orders, keeping drivers parked until the issue is resolved.

Vehicle Focus: Tire Condition and Maintenance

Tires will be under the spotlight.  Inspectors will check for:

  • Proper inflation
  • Minimum tread depth
  • Tire damage such as bulges, cuts, or sidewall wear
  • Air leaks
  • Tread separation
  • Improper repairs

Given that tire-related violations are a leading cause of out-of-service citations, now’s the time for fleets and drivers to take a proactive approach with inspections and maintenance.

Why This Matters

If a driver or vehicle is placed out of service, they’re sidelined until all issues are corrected—leading to costly delays and potential missed deliveries.  However, those who pass a Level 1 or Level 5 inspection with no critical violations will earn a CVSA decal valid for three months, signaling compliance and reducing the likelihood of re-inspection during that period.

How to Prepare

  • Review HOS logs and ensure ELD devices are functioning properly
  • Check tire pressure and inspect for visible wear or damage
  • Ensure all documentation is up to date and easily accessible
  • Perform a full pre-trip inspection prior to hitting the road
  • Educate drivers on what to expect during inspections and what documentation they’ll need to provide
