Tractor Trailers on a Mission: Spreading Awareness for National Cancer Awareness Month

In a unique and impactful way, Road Scholar Transport has transformed its fleet into moving billboards for cancer awareness, using brightly colored tractor trailers to spread the message across the nation while delivering freight.  With a rich history of supporting various cancer charities and a commitment to public health, Road Scholar’s awareness trucks remind us all of the importance of early detection and prevention.

Updated Cancer Statistics: A Stark Reminder

The fight against cancer is more urgent than ever, with recent statistics painting a sobering picture:

  • Breast Cancer:
According to cancer.org, an estimated 316,950 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in women, with nearly 42,170 women expected to succumb to the disease.
  • Lung Cancer:
Lung cancer remains the deadliest, with projections of approximately 226,650 new diagnoses and nearly 124,730 deaths this year.
  • Pancreatic Cancer:
As the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths, pancreatic cancer is particularly lethal.  Nearly 67,440 new cases are expected this year, with over 51,980 deaths.  The high mortality rate calls for heightened awareness and support for research into better treatments.
  • Prostate Cancer:
Prostate cancer continues to affect a significant number of men, with around 313,780 new cases anticipated and nearly 35,770 deaths projected.
  • Childhood Cancer:
In the realm of pediatric cancer, it is estimated that around 9,550 children between the ages of 0 and 15 will be diagnosed, with about 1,050 young lives lost.  Initiatives like Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation serve as a beacon of hope, fighting childhood cancer “one cup at a time.”

These statistics serve as a powerful reminder of why every effort to raise awareness and improve early diagnosis is so crucial.

Awareness Trucks: A Fleet with a Purpose

Road Scholar Transport has long recognized that trucking is more than just moving goods—it’s also a means to inspire and educate.  Each of our awareness trucks is dedicated to a specific cause, turning a simple journey into a moving tribute to those fighting cancer.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alexandra Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma before her first birthday.  After receiving a stem cell transplant when she was just four years old, Alex wanted to open up a lemonade stand and “give the money to doctors to allow them to ‘help other kids, like they helped me,’” she said.  She ended up raising $2,000 that year.  As more and more people heard Alex’s story, they too began to open lemonade stands and with their help, Alex was able to raise over $1 million to help find a cure before she passed away at the age of 8.

Working together with Liz Scott, Alex’s mother who founded the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Road Scholar’s bright yellow tractor trailer was created, featuring an image of young Alex at her lemonade stand with the goal “Fighting Childhood Cancer, One Cup at a Time.”

Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation

Partnering with the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, Road Scholar transformed one of its trucks into a tribute to children battling cancer.  The jet-black trailer, adorned with the foundation’s iconic bear and a red bandana, represents hope and recovery.  The foundation’s programs—ranging from the Bear-Able Gift program to the Camp Scholarship Program—provide tangible support to children in need, ensuring that cancer survivors have a brighter future.

Sky High for St. Jude

Working with Hebert, Usable Creative of Lafayette, La, and Elmo Rinaldi (President & CEO of Northern Wine & Spirits and who introduced Road Scholar to Sky High), a new awareness truck was born, this one On the Road to Save Lives!  Shooting for Comfort, Aiming for a Cure, spreading the word for Sky High for St. Jude, which helps fund research, provide comfort, and save lives at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

American Breast Cancer Foundation

Road Scholar’s commitment to breast cancer awareness began with a personal challenge from former owner Jim Barrett, who famously turned an 80,000-pound tractor trailer pink to promote breast cancer awareness.  “Anyone could put on a pink shirt or a pink band around their wrist.  Go try an 80,000-pound tractor trailer all pinked up for breast cancer awareness,” said Barrett.

Northeast Regional Cancer Institute

Our Rock on Judi H trailer, benefiting the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, was created in memory of Judi H, musician Paul LaBelle’s niece who passed away from breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 45.  LaBelle started the Rock on Judi H campaign, selling $20 raffle tickets featuring a chance to win a one-of-a-kind Pink Lady Guitar, created and autographed by renowned guitar maker Paul Reed Smith.  All proceeds from the sales were donated to the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute in Judi’s memory.

Prostate Cancer Awareness

Among the awareness fleet is a teal-painted truck, standing for prostate cancer awareness, a cause close to the hearts of many in the trucking community, including former driver Greg Kearsh, whose diagnosis spurred this initiative.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

Highlighting the urgency of one of the most lethal cancers, a purple truck emblazoned with the trademark purple ribbon and stars travels nationwide to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, encouraging early detection and research efforts.

Lung Cancer Alliance

The idea to create an awareness truck for Lung Cancer Alliance got started when Linda Sacco, a volunteer at the organization, and her husband, ran into Jim Barrett at an antique car show.  Linda’s husband was a former driver for Road Scholar and while catching up, Linda began talking about Lung Cancer Alliance.  The idea of creating a trailer for this great organization took off.

Road Scholar’s awareness truck features three of Lung Cancer Alliance’s amazing advocates from Scranton; Karen (a two-time lung cancer survivor) and her husband Jim, along with Linda, who is Karen’s sister.

The Role of Transportation in Raising Awareness

While these awareness trucks play a critical role in public education, they also exemplify the broader responsibility of the trucking industry.  Road Scholar Transport stands at the forefront of both awareness and safety.  Our commitment to ethical practices, advanced security measures, and strict compliance with safety regulations ensures that our shipments, whether pharmaceuticals or everyday groceries, are handled with the utmost care and integrity.

Conclusion

As National Cancer Awareness Month brings renewed focus on the fight against cancer, the trucking industry plays a crucial role in driving awareness and ensuring safety.  Through our fleet of dedicated awareness trucks, Road Scholar Transport is making a significant impact, not only by supporting vital cancer charities but also by setting high standards for transportation safety and ethical practices.
